Before briefing a home, describe an ordinary day

A room list describes what you need. Daily routines explain how those rooms should relate.

Begin with an ordinary day rather than a favorite house image. Where do you set things down on arrival? Who cooks first? Does someone keep working in the evening? Activities occurring together may be convenient for one person and disruptive for another.

List what you want to keep alongside what you want to change: a bright corner that becomes hot in the afternoon, or an easy route with nowhere to put belongings. These observations make constraints clearer than “an open home.”

Consider less typical days too: visitors, remote work, recovery or changed routines. Which rooms should adapt, and which should always remain quiet? A useful brief records both known needs and open questions.

Prepare three lists: important routines, desired changes and known constraints. Reference images can then communicate atmosphere without standing in for the whole brief.
